The 1978 World Chess Championship match between the world champion, 27-year-old Anatoly Karpov, and the winner of the candidates competition, 47-year-old Viktor Korchnoi, took place from July 18 to October 18, 1978 in Baguio (Philippines).
Karpov got the right to play in the match as the reigning world champion (in 1975 he received the title without playing due to the refusal of Bobby Fischer). Korchnoi, who by that time was a stateless person (he left the USSR in 1976 and was deprived of citizenship), received the right to play in the match as the winner of the 1977 candidates matches, where Korchnoi beat Tigran Petrosian, Lev Polugaevsky and Boris Spassky.
On October 18, in the 32nd, decisive game of the match in Baguio, Karpov managed to win and won the match with a score of 6:5 (with 21 draws), retaining the title of world champion.
